Mobile Phone

    Hello,
    I'm new to Bahrain and am looking to get a mobile (cell) phone. My UK phone is dying a slow death so I need (OK, want!) a new one ASAP. Can you please recommend which provider and also if I should choose pay as you go or pay monthly. I'd like a smart phone to be able to access 3G/4G and wifi out and about. I'm a previous iPhone user but willing to convert to an android based phone if the deals are better.

    If pay monthly is the way to go will I need a Bahrain bank account to set this up or will I be able to use my UK one?

    Any other helpful hints/tips appreciated. I had a look at the phone stand in Carrefour but the staff there were not exactly helpful.

    The main mobile providers here are VIVA, Zain and Batelco - the best thing to do is to go to the stores for each of them and get them to check coverage in your area, as some areas can be patchy with one supplier but not another.

    When I first arrived in Bahrain, I had pay as you go for a few months, then converted to contract once I knew we were staying and what the coverage was like for my supplier. I THINK you have to have a Bahrain bank account to set up a contract, but again, best to check with a store.
